Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her mother and grandmother. Ford was suffering from anxiety disorder based on word associations as a young child. Ford was intrigued by the field of acting during her teen years, and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted into Sylvia Young Theatre School but after just one week she realized that she didn't fit in. Ford was then able to apply for a place for the Central School of Speech and Drama and received an acceptance on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. The actor was later to play recurring roles as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford did not graduate in 1993. But, by 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that time, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared on TV in the Nineties with shows such as The Bill and Men Behaving Badly. In addition to her regular performances in the theatre, Tate also joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. However, Tate quickly began gaining recognition for her stand-up comedic performances that she incorporated into her resume in the year 1996.
